BIO - STEWART M. SCHULMAN

Stewart is an award-winning producer, director, writer, and independent filmmaker.  He has written the feature screenplays: BOTH, SISTER BERT, LA MACHA, and BEYOND MEASURE.   His feature-length documentary film “LEFT ALONE RHAPSODY - The Musical Memoir of Pianist John Bayless” is currently garnering awards on the film festival circuit.

John and Stewart began collaborating when John composed the score for an earlier 43-minute version of BEYOND MEASURE, which was awarded the Silver Medal at The Houston International Film Festival.  Stewart then went on to direct a full-length play version of BEYOND MEASURE in its off-Broadway premiere. Their latest collaboration is a full-length one-man play with music, (part of the documentary) titled: “John Bayless – ONE HAND ONE HEART – My Life & My Music.” 

Stewart has produced and directed numerous short videos for Montclair State University. For the stage, he’s directed world premieres of THE CHAOS THEORIES (Shotgun Prods.), TOUCH OF RAPTURE (NJ Rep), SILENCE (NJ Rep), THE PAVILION (Penguin Rep), OUT OF THE WHEELCHAIR AND INTO THE FIRE (co-written with comedienne Esther Goodhart; Pan Asian Rep), and LÁGRIMAS DE MIS MADRES (co-written with poetess Maria Aponte; Shotgun Prods.).

Early in his career, Stewart performed as a modern-jazz dancer, worked as a choreographer in New York City, acted in off-off-Broadway plays,  performed improv comedy with NIT (the National Improvisational Theater), and appeared in several national TV commercials.   

Stewart has been a dramaturg for Heidi Latsky Dance, (a company featuring dancers with and without disabilities), and is on their advisory board. He has directed numerous gala/benefit evenings, live industrials, and award shows (with musical, comedic and dance talent) for a diverse group of organizations including PepsiCo, Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, Interactive New Media Awards, Greenpeace, Museum of Chinese in The Americas, Dance New Amsterdam, Organization for Autism Research, and Shotgun Productions.

Stewart spent his undergraduate years at the University of Pennsylvania majoring in architecture and environmental design, and minoring in theater and photography.  He did his graduate work at NYU’s graduate school of Film and Television.
